Hi Kimberly, As as a hobbyist/ someone just learning, here's how I go about it.
I use a combination of notepad, and the gadget editor gadget: http://www.google.com/ig/directory?hl=en&url=www.google.com/ig/modules/gge.xml. I save my test gadget via the editor, but I do NOT publish it. Once saved, I grab the URL from the gadget editor gadget, then use the my gadgets gadget: http://www.google.com/ig/directory?hl=en&url=www.google.com/ig/modules/developer.xml to add the test gadget to igoogle. Once the test gadget is added to igoogle, usually within a few minutes, I can go to more about this gadget to see how it might look in the igoogle directory/grab the code for testing adding the gadget to a webpage/test how the gadget may appear for doing so. As I have a URL, I can add to a dummy blog/other places for testing. I use the gadget checker gadget http://www.google.com/ig/directory?hl=en&url=www.google.com/ig/modules/codechecker/codechecker.xml to assist in identifying errors/problems, although it's not perfect. When I feel the gadget is ready for publication - I then upload a version to my own webspace, add to igoogle & re-test. I will then go and delete the first test version hosted with google via the gadget editor gadget. Sometimes I'll host a test gadget in my own webspace & use the above gadgets. Until the gadget is published, I feel it's unlikely anyone else will find it, providing I don't link to it.
