I think Garthhh's initial question here has not really been answered.
As he is probably already aware, the libesd.so.0 dependency is semi-
bogus in that pulse-audio which is what many if not most desktop Linux
distros are going to SUPPORTS esound functions and Picasa 3 will work
fine without libesd.so.0.  So this dependency needs to be redefined by
Google in a way that allows pulse audio to fulfill whatever sound
requirements Picasa has.  In the mean time we have to use the ugly
"rpm -Uvh --nodeps picasa-3.0-current.i386.rpm" approach that messes
up our package database with an unnecessary error exception.
Hopefully the Google team will address this problem so that it doesn't
infect future stable versions as well.  As for using Windows versions,
I have had not so good experience running Wine globally.  I really
don't mind running it in integrated fashion as with the Linux version
of Picasa, but not globally.  - George
