The problem with that is that browsers (except Chrome?) don't refresh 
the screen display while Javascript is actually running. They wait for 
Javascript to pause. So if you're addOverlay()ing markers in a loop, you 
could tell the browser to update the progress bar but it won't display 
the change until you finish the loop and pass control back to the 
browser.

It is possible to process your markers in batches, using setTimeout to 
trigger the processing of the next batch. That gets rather messy and 
moves away from your "easy to implement" objective. It can also have a 
significant impact on the speed at which your markers get processed.
