Be weary of what mike says, i've been using the same,
this.oAddInterval = setInterval(function() { oGeoStart.displayBatch(); },
this._iLoadInterval);
I've built some sort of preloader/load process class kinda thing.

oPreloader = new cPreloader(oMap, iWidth);
oPreloader.start(500); // Amount of operations, unhides the preloader.
oPreloader.updateLoader(iAdded); // Add amount of operations just done
oPreloader.remove(); // Hide the preloader.
At the bottom of the script you find the LoaderControl. This control is a
google maps custom control you might wanna chage to fit your site.
