Of course, we all know that the easiest way to fix the problem is to
upgrade to Firefox, Safari or Chrome. ;-)

I agree completely!
However, there may be a simple trick you can do to force IE8 to switch
its bugs for those of IE7.
You can try adding:
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />

BTW, I don't have IE8, so I cannot actually see the problem.
