Okay this is crazy. I remembered that my friend said that he could access the map pages from a link that I had sent him in an email message, but not directly from the menu page on the web site, so I emailed the link to my wife's account and opened that email with vista- firefox-gmail and clicked on the link. It opened the page properly. After that, I could open other map pages from the menu page that would not open properly before. This is the same page that I used to compare source code described above.
