Yes, tile layer might be best.  But my ultralight marker class gives
me 15000 points on Google Chrome without any problem (though IE8 seems
to drag after 5000 or so).

It's based on the MarkerLight class, just stripped down a bit, and
with click, mouseover and mouseout events as well as the ability to
easily use whatever image file you like.  Feel free to use it if you
find it helpful.
