Also, see Mike Williams' (v2) tutorial:

His tutorial is based on v2 of the Google Maps API, but it explains
the concepts behind the implementation.  The page you refer to is my
port of his example for that tutorial page from v2 to v3 of the Google
Maps Javascript API.
