Dont make them only for search engines. Make them for people who dont have javascript enabled, or using screen-readers etc - ie they are 'accessible' pages. Or they could be suited for printing too. Rarely should you 'design' for search engines - design to please your users. Offering a simple text version of your page, will quite possibly please a (small) number of your users.
