There may already be a useful post in this forum that answers my question,
but I am not sure what to search for to track down the information I am
after, so I am just posting a new thread.

I am trying to find a way to grab all values in column Y that share a
common value for the cell in column X in their row. Allow me to
elaborate...

I have started a job waiting tables and created a spreadsheet where I plan
to record the tips I earn for each shift that I work. Column A contains
the numeric date, Column B contains the actual day of the week (Monday,
Tuesday, etc...), and Column C contains the amount of money I earned in
tips that night. What I would like to do is, in a new column, establish a
cell that corresponds to each of the 7 days of the week and write a formula
that will identify all tip values in Column C that were earned for that day
of the week as recorded in Column B, add them together, and divide them by
the total number of values that were added. In other words, the cell that
corresponds to Friday (for example) would end up showing a value for the
average amount of tips I earn on Friday nights. So, the formula would scan
the values in Column B for "Friday" and then grab the value from Column C
every time it finds "Friday" and sue those values for averaging my tips.
My thought is that, once I have data for a few months of work, I will be
able to look at my spreadsheet and estimate what I am likely to earn in any
given week based on the days I am scheduled to work. Is this possible to
do?

Please, feel free to ask clarifying questions if I didn't explain this
well. Also, I am not opposed to using multiple cells and formulas to reach
this end goal. So if I need to establish a certain value in one cell that
will then be used in a formula for another cell, that is totally fine by me.

THANKS!
