I'm using a component datasheet as an example since they tend to
contain text, diagrams/images, tables and graphs.

- Have a two-pane window layout; original document shown on the left
of the screen and translated document on the right. Makes it easier
for users to visually link the location of the translated text to the
original text.

- Original document is 'scanned' and broken down into groups/clumps
and sub-groups. (imagine highlighting all text in yellow, images/
diagrams in blue, tables in green, etc).

- Each group is then translated with the translated copy positioned in
the same location as referenced from the top left of the group. Users
get the option of overlaying the translated text over the original
document. If translated text takes up an area larger than the original
group area, text size is shrunk to fit. Chances are (for romanised
fonts) the text area should be similar, otherwise one can assume that
the translation is not perfect yet.

- Groups that can't be translated such as graphs are ignored. Where
text is present though, they are translated with the same principal as
above to preserve location.

- Users can also specify which groups or areas in the document to
ignore or translate

Perhaps something like that would work?
