You should be OK with that, it's what's recommended,isn't it. I haven't gone too deeply into doctypes (for that read 'not at all, really') it's the same as the one I mentioned, just that mine had the dtd location - it's just the spec, really - you can download the 'loose' one (for transitional) from here www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd which makes for quite interesting reading if the alternative is watching paint dry at night with the lights off
What browser are you testing in? It sounds like IE, but I though you were on Linux...
