Mmm. An 'ideas man' with no idea how not to give his money away. I like that
:-)

Pay for completion of stages that are well-defined and can be used with
other developers if the subsequent stage isn't forthcoming. This benefits
everyone involved because no-one is tied in/indespensible (depending which
side you are on) and everyone is agreed exactly what constitutes
'acceptable' because everything is written down - if it's not in the spec,
you don't get it in the product. If it is in the spec, the developer doesn't
get paid until it is provided.

The cost of the initial negotiations are built in to the first stage
payment, therefore there's no risk to you, and the developer has to believe
they can deliver at least the first stage, or it's a complete waste of their
time.

What the stages are depends on the size of the project, the speed of
development, and the project itself.

If you don't trust each other, use an escrow agent.
