I feel your pain. I narrowed this down in our case to an incorrect style assignment. From memory I was setting:
DOM.setStyleAttribute("overflowX", "none"); Instead of: DOM.setStyleAttribute("overflowX", "hidden"); Only in IE was it throwing this exception. I would suggest checking your style assignments, it could be the same problem.
