Yep, sounds like the AppEngine outage<http://googleappengine.blogspot.com/2012/10/about-todays-app-engine-outage.html>. Kind of scary given the AWS cloud failure<https://aws.amazon.com/message/680342/>earlier this week.
In the past (such as AWS in June <http://aws.amazon.com/message/67457/>) it was classic power loss and generator failures. However in these cases, a simple single hardware fault led to cascading, runaway failures that crippled the entire service. From a systems design approach, these failures are much more troubling given that these are the two largest *Cloud* players, and they cannot even get it right.
