SSIR Scoop: Recommendations to the White House

The official White House Web site lists an Office of Social Innovation, notes
a
Chronicle of Philanthropy story
in the February 12th issue, signaling President Obama's commitment to support
the nonprofit sector. The article goes on to quote Michele Jolin's article
"Innovating the White House" in the Spring 2008 SSIR. Jolin, a senior fellow at
the Center for American Progress, headed a group that advised President Obama
on innovation and civil society. Click here to read the SSIR article with
Jolin's four federal policy recommendations.

  New Social Innovation Conversation

Panel discussion: Lessons for a New Social Movement

As we enter an unprecedented political era in the history of the United
States, the need for positive social change is greater than ever. In this
discussion from the 2008 Encore Careers Summit, scholars and activists discuss
the origins of three great social movements in this country: the women's
movement, the civil rights movement, and the environmental movement. Each
panelist explores what lessons may be gained from these movements and how the
encore movement, which is focused on harnessing the energies of people over 50
in productive new career directions, may help influence social, economic, and
political policies around the world.

Kelly Kleiman; Dead Men Read No 401(k)s

Last month, Slate and Chronicle of Philanthropy published their annual
ranking of top donors of 2008. Most gave only after their death.

So, apparently the only people who aren't panicky about their financial
futures are people who don't have financial futures.

"Some of the country's richest philanthropists say the bleak economy is
causing them to put off making new gifts, and fundraisers already are noticing
a dip in eight- and nine-figure donations," said Stacy Palmer, editor of the
Chronicle of Philanthropy, which has tracked and published this data since
2000, and also provides the data and reporting used to compile the Slate 60
list. "What's different about this recession as compared to the last few is
that it is affecting charitable donations of all kinds, not just those by the
poor and middle class."
