Hello Russ,

I am hoping you are be able to help me direct a couple of suggestions to
appropriate PCORnet folk.

I think today’s GPC dev call was the first time I saw a link to
https://github.com/PCORnet . Would it make sense for
https://github.com/CDMFORUM to also live in the same github organization rather
than exist separately?

The CDM4.0 draft spec includes value sets as an excel workbook appendix. This
includes sources for the value sets which is definitely helpful but doesn’t
facilitate versioning and change tracking very easily. It would be even better
to have them as delimited plain text files in a git repo. Implementation of
these value sets into CDM 4.0 datamarts is very likely to identify necessary
changes and additions. Plain text format files would allow tracking of changes
and also make it trivial to import them as database lookup tables for any CDM
build process. This would make it much easier to avoid out of spec values
compared to current practice which requires each site to hand transcribe the
values sets from the existing documents into ETL code. (I have certainly had
such bugs myself).

A final spec could reference the value sets as a single immutable github
tag/commit while at the same time allowing them to evolve with initial
implementation experience.

Thank you and best regards,
