I am presuming that this works for linux distributions where the OS

Yes, of course Linux. Running a Win4Lin terminal server as well to cater for
the needs of those still needing to run some software on Win98SE (emulation)
Any newer kernel can be compiled with SATA support, and all modern distros I
know come with pre-configired bootable SATA support out of the box
Do you need / recommend a specific motherboard for external SATA raid
access?
I haven't tried enough to really be able to recommend - so far they all seem
to work nicely. For most mainboards, you have to buy the external connector
bracket separately.
Which SATA RAID systems do you use / recommend? How much would you price
this at?
I use the Stardom SOHO Raid - recently I bulk ordered it on the nat-div list,
think there were some 20 people ordering it and a colleague was nice enough
to handle it for all of us.
The first one I bought in Singapore from "Storage Solutions" in Funan IT Mall,
and after I reported enthusiastically (self contained device, zero drivers
needed, hot swappable, auto-rebuild, operated via small buttons and LCD
display on front panel, silent and cool) the bulk order on nat-div
eventuated.
