This bug on notify-python-0.1.1 was reported (for ubuntu):
http://trac.galago-project.org/ticket/121.
You'll also find a patch which may work for you, but it's better to grab an
earlier version.

Which version of python-pynotify (or pynotify or python-notify, however
the package is called in Gentoo) do you have installed? Is there a newer
version which you can try to install?
I've simply added a warning now and a try..except around the
attach_to_status_icon() until we find out if it's because of the old
version or because of some other bug.
