What driver/format did you use?  What version?  What BIOS version?  Is
it the latest?  What is the PCI ID of NICs you've tried?  If this is
hanging at that point, it definitely sounds like a bad issue in
initialization.

As far as add-in NICs, results vary as to whether the NIC has a boot
ROM and if the BIOS will choose to pick it up.
