Sorry I should have said, I tried using the raw protocol like this from
bash with the same results:
export SERVER=carbon-server
export PORT=2003
echo "local.random.thing 1000 `date +%s`" | nc $SERVER $PORT
# works as expected - gauge visible in graphite
echo "stats.gauges.local.random.thing 1000 `date +%s`" | nc $SERVER $PORT
# does not work
