d.erase still exists, and works with direct rendering. The result a
blank image.

This may not be a great deal of use within the GUI, but it does work. 
It is useful in other contexts (e.g. creating the initial image if you
intend to use GRASS_PNG_READ=TRUE for subsequent commands).
