Hi Alan,
there's no Reason as such. It's just the way it's designed. This
behaviour is not set in stone, we may well change it in upcoming
versions.

For now, what you have to remember is that whenever *multiple* output
values are the result of a *single* input value, there will be an
additional dimension to the output path. I picked this option because
it works under all circumstances and there are no special cases. The
down-side is that it often results in paths that have more dimensions
than strictly needed.
