Normally, I would suggest adding an event listener and listening for
events, doing fancy AJAX-y stuff, all that kind of thing.

But in this case, there are actually two Firefox addons that will almost
certainly do a better job faster and easier, so I recommend you use one
or both of them instead. The first one is Check4Change
(http://check4change.mozdev.org/ |
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3028), which checks a
given webpage periodically for changes to the text selected when you
first invoke it. C4C does not remember pages to check when you restart
Firefox, however, which can sometimes be annoying, as you have to re-set
any and all pages you want to check when you start a session. SiteDelta
(http://sitedelta.schierla.de/index.en.php |
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4337) fixes this by using
a somewhat different setup, where you add pages to a persistent list to
check. It will check the pages every hour, day, week, or whatever (in
this case, presumably every 15 minutes). The nice thing about each of
these addons is that they can play custom sounds when a page changes,
and each of them allows you to specify exactly what part of the page to
change.

Personally, I prefer SiteDelta, as it's rather more powerful and I don't
have to keep setting up the pages every time, but I've used C4C with a
good bit of success in the past, too; C4C is a rather simpler, also.

Hope this helps, and hope you get lots of positions!
