It does not surprise me to know of the exclusion of Roma from the
UN
Holocaust Memorial Day. This is yet another manifestation of how
obsolete and redundant the Institution has become. This is a blatant
denial of history and another veritable example of the fact that the
institution was ab initio meant only to cater to the needs of a
select group of countries and communities like the Jews, and the
reason for refusal to acknowledge the suffering of Romani from an
institution allegedly charged with its protection is profound and
obvious. The United Nations is as perverted if not more than its now
defunct predecessor, the League of Nations. The members of the UN
have also not accepted their own Romani populations and so consider
the Romanis to be a nation less people. Recently the civilized world
was aghast to see the poignant picture of Romani girls lying dead on
an Italian beach while Italian Beach goers were least bothered to see
the corpses of the Romani girls. The Berlusconi government had
earlier launched a high-profile campaign against the community which
originated in India and still speak an Indo –Aryan language closely
akin to Panjabi and Pashto , spearheaded by the programme announced
by the Interior Minister, Roberto Marroni, to fingerprint the entire
Roma population. The move marks a a return to the racial registers
introduced by the Fascist regime in the 1930s. The fingerprinting of
Roma in Naples began on 19 June. At the first international Roma
festival, held in Chandigarh on 1976, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi
had supported their demand for Roma to be recognized as national
minority of Indian origin. Here in India, the name Italy does ring a
bell , Doesn't it?
