Convention planned Special Correspondents
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/KANNUR: A national convention would be held at Payyannur on
March 12 in support of Chithralekha, a Dalit woman whose autorickshaw was set
ablaze allegedly by local CITU-CPI(M) activists and who is allegedly being
intimidated by CITU, INTUC and BMS workers, a meeting held here on Saturday
under the aegis of certain activist groups and academics and chaired by B.R.P.
Bhaskar, decided. Vehicle jatha
It also decided to hold an organising committee meeting in Kozhikode on
February 21 and conduct a vehicle jatha by women in Payyannur to create
awareness about the issues.
Meanwhile, the Payyannur Autorickshaw Drivers’ Coordination Committee, with
representation from the CITU, the INTUC and the BMS, said it would welcome any
inquiry into the alleged incidents.
Its leaders led by U.V. Ramachandran told the media in Kannur they would extend
all help to Chithralekha if she wanted to ply her vehicle.
But the committee had decided to bar her husband from operating his
autorickshaw at Payyannur for a period as an informal ‘punishment’ for drunk
driving, they said.
