On the issue of arrests of two CPI(M) activists as `Maoist activists' under
UAPA in Kerala, the BJP has asked whether the police in Kerala is playing
to the tune of the pressures of CPI(M), and if so, they should tell the
people that what matters is the party and not the Indian Constitution.
Interestingly, the BJP in Kerala is trying to be a `defender' of Indian
Constitution, without realizing that UAPA itself is a violation of Indian
Constitution. Moreover, most of the arrests under UAPA in India are also
violations of the basic norms spelled out even by the UAPA. The human
rights activists in India have been demanding the removal of this draconian
law called UAPA for a long time, which gives powers for the police to
arrest anybody under mere suspicion and it becomes the job of the victim to
prove innocence. Whether the left in India can understand the implications
of this undemocratic law and take a strong stand against it is yet to be
seen. Most of the `evidences' produced by the police in different parts to
justify the arrests under UAPA so far in India, are funnier than this
cartoon. Reality in India today is the best cartoon which no cartoonist can
compete with.
