Since this is my first posting to this mailing list, I would like to thank everyone involved with this project for all the hard work to make gregorio a reality. I have been using it for awhile and it is very useful.
We are starting a very large project at the moment, and planning to have several collaborators for the inputting of GABC, which is not very difficult. However I need to plan a strategy for the actual layout. As I have a bit of experience with LaTeX I was going to do the whole thing with emacs->gregorio->latex->lualatex->Preview.app. The project is essentially a reproduction of the Solesmes/Declee 805 but in Latin-Polish, starting with the creation of a book for Holy Week. No such edition has ever been attempted in Polish to my knowledge, though I have collected quite a few books to aid in transcribing - namely the Kyriale of Mizgalski, the Missal of Lefebvre, etc. You can download Declee 805 book here: http://www.gregorianbooks.com/gregorian/pdf/CMAA/1957_Mass_and_Vespers.pdf The parts of Holy Week start on page 545/605. There will be added to this the text and chants of the Tenebrae. There is an English and a French edition of the Triduum available, but not for download as far as I know. Of particular interest is the layout of the translation of the chants - instead of interlinear, it is put in a floating text block at the beginning. In my mind this is the most practical, especially from a singers point of view, as it is there is you want to know the meaning, but not encumbering the music. For instance, in the above link you can see on page 25 (83 of the pdf) the Asperges me translation is set off from the chant in a separate text box, and the chant as it were wraps around it. It would even be better if the translation was on the inside of the binding, that is to say, alternating on each page, but that is not essential. There is only one problem with this idea: how to implement it in Gregorio? I have tried several things, firstly by changing the margins of the page in the middle of the .tex output of Gregorio, but that doesn't seem to work as the gregorio style cannot let you switch it back in the same page. I was also thinking of doing a float box, but the lines show underneath the text. On the whole, it doesn't seem possible for gregorio to change the width of the score in the middle of the text. Has anyone attempted anything like this, and if so, how? I am in the middle of looking through the gregorio.sty to see how it could be done, but I thought better to ask before spending much time on this. I would prefer a solution that could be automated to some degree, for instance by taking the variable from the height of the translations text box and making gregorio break at those. However, if it needs to be done manually by insertion of a code in the .tex produced by gregorio, I could write a script that could automate this. Another solution that I have thought doing is to break the gregorio code of the chant into two parts, each with a different size and then importing them into multicolumn format, but this would be rather tedious for so many, and would require visual editing of each page which is something to be avoided. Does anyone have any ideas? I would be willing to share all the files of this project on google-code or elsewhere if anyone wants to insert their own translations and build their own "Gregorian Missal". The project is still in general outline phase at the moment, but will be starting before Sunday in earnest. I speak Polish, English, French and a bit of Italian/Spanish. German as well, but I tend to avoid that language like the plague. Thank you for your help and for the fantastic program gregorio! x.
