How can you force compress notes into a single line?
I found that I can do this:
( z)
which feeds blank space into the staff, compressing all the
notes beforehand, but it also seems to compress the notes
afterward, too.
Is that how y'all do it?

If you write in gabc file the staff will be there even if
it is empty (no notes).
You may put lirics without notes in a tex file.
