Dear Boris,
Practicing gregorian make me looking at ancient neumatic notation to
get a better interpretation of melodies. I think people like
"Association grégorienne de Nantes" could be interested for the
annual weekend they organize.
I think this motivation is shared by many people, if there are no other
specific things, the goal of this extension will most certainly be to
suit the needs of people like you.
learning make paper more readable than the Triplex edit old books or
going further in re-editing older books, like for the Dominican Rit.
Ok, great! What is the Dominican Rit.?
I think that people who wants to improve the way they sing gregorian
will need to access old neumatic notation. With a tool like Gregorio,
it will be possible to edit some books to help learning this
notation, some song books readable (in the triplex, one of the old
notation is nearly on the latin text).
Sure.
Perhaps in first time, a tool to compile "gabc" (or "nabc") files
independent of gregorian ones. Then after, an option in the
\inputscore to place a neumatic notation above the gregorian one.
Hmm this would be a very difficult design, as the alignment needs to be
done inside a file that will define everything, e.g.:
ab(gh|podatus1) cd(hg|clivis4)
or something like this.
Of course it would be possible to make several files and to
automagically merge them e.g.:
file1: ab(gh) cd(hg)
file2: ab(podatus1) cd(clivis4)
this case would be easy, but cases like:
ab(gabc1|nabc1|gabc2|nabc2)
is already more difficult: if you separate in two files:
ab(gabc1gabc2)
ab(nabc1nabc2)
how will you merge the two files? should we consider it breaks at all
neumatic element separation? This will certainly be ok with most
use-cases, but I'm 100% sure that cases will appear where it won't be
possible...
The problem with one big file it that it's much more difficult to
maintain and less flexible...
Another possibility is to take the problem upside down:
What if ab(gabc1|nabc1|gabc2|nabc2) would be split into two files? I'm
not sure it's a good idea, but it's just an idea in tbe brainstorming...
Something like gabc If the question is about St Gall or Laon, I was
thinking they were both similar and the differences are on the
melody, aren't they ?
Well, you know more than me, but if they's similar it's a good news!
Do you have the book of Maurice Tilly and his table with all the old
neumes and gregorian signs and their correspondence ?
No, but it sounds like a good investment...
Thank you,
--
Elie
