Thanks!  I will try to update MacOS as you recommend.  Our Internet connection 
is satellite-based and that update is really large.  

I agree that the error message I received is puzzling.  I am compiling from the 
test.tex document in TexShop by clicking the “typeset” button.  I am using 
TexShop 3.51.  I installed from mactex-20150613.pkg.
