I just tried your method and it perfectly solved my problem. Thank you very 
much!

So, how "dangerous" is the blank-bracket method? So far I can see only one side 
effect that extra space will be inserted there, but I'm not sure if there will 
be change to its behavior. I already have a few dozen of source files using 
that method, so I wonder if I should correct them ASAP.

I think what you're looking for is to force centering:

2ab. {E}c(ehg)

this will result in the neume being centered on the E. See
