Thank you for poinring me in the good direction.
To get the problem, I need to have both :
a) - <sp>'*æ*</sp> sequence instead of <sp>'*ae*/sp>
b) - \usepackage[utf8]{luainputenc}
I suppose that luainputenc (I see you were too a contributor of it,
Elie..) was required someday, but seems no more useful today.

With 4.1 (Congatulations and thanks...), on a debian jessie with
LuaTeX, Version beta-0.79.1
In the good old Regina Caeli, with <sp>'æ</sp>, I get :
! LuaTeX error [\directlua]:1: invalid escape sequence near '\c'.
\GreSpecial ...regoriotex.special_character("#1")}
I have checked with 4.1 to be sure but I had the problem with some
previous release.
Thanks for your report, but could you provide a minimal example (no
space tuning, no custom text font, etc.) showing the problem?
Thank you,
