Thanks for your replies. I did some more tests, and I find that the system
described by Br Samuel works for the default font (Libertine? Whichever one
appears when I have fontspec loaded but don't specify a font) as well as
Times New Roman, but doesn't work with Adobe's Minion Pro or Garamond
Premier Pro. In any event, the œ does show up in Minion and Garamond, but
without any accent, so I'm not sure what's going on here.

I tried opening Minion Pro and Times New Roman in Fontforge, but couldn't
figure out where the proper diacritical would be. Could anyone give me more
guidance on that?

If I'm not able to get this to work, does anyone have suggestions of
alternate fonts to consider? I quite like Minion for my project, but am
willing to consider alternatives...
