I tried the following: a) select the variable & hit the delete key, b) 
highlight it, right-click & choose delete, and c) enter "delete v1" from the 
console window. I get the error each time when I subsequently try to save the 
data set (either ctrl+s or file -> save data).

How are you deleting the variable? I ask because on a quick look I
can't replicate this problem.
