This is suspicious. Try to convert a PNM file manually into the PNG
format. If that fails, please try to find a working pnmtopng
executable and report which netpbm (or pnmtopng) version is failing
and which one is working.

Say
gdb --args tbl mixed_pickles.roff
then press `r' (and ignore tbl's output to stdout). If tbl crashes,
press `bt full' and cut'n'paste the backtrace.
