Folks,

For the past year we've tried something different. Partially out of
need, and partially as something we thought was a good idea. Basically
we hid the ticket system we were using from day to day users at
launchpad, filing tickets for them. While doing this we also
inadvertently hid a bunch of other things. At the same time we
switched to mercurial for source code development, which was a good
thing. But it also took away a lot of transparency in source code
development. Most people didn't know about http://growl.info/hg/ much
less the bitbucket repos.

Some of this was out of the lack of resources that we now have to
maintain our own trac and svn servers. Part of this was out of the
need to move to better tools for development purposes (mercurial is
better than svn at merges for instance).

During this time we also moved the mailing list to google groups,
which has proved to be a very positive move. Most of the reason why is
that things are a lot more transparent now. However, for everything
else we changed, it was all pretty hidden behind a wall of knowledge.
To be honest this fell a little flat. Personally I started not liking
working on Growl, and kind of stopped for a little while to focus on
other things. I don't know how the others feel about this, but I'm
excited about the change we're making today.

We are officially moving major development to Google Code hosting. We
are also moving the ticket system to Google Code hosting as well. And
we get a wiki for free with all of this. The benefit here is a lot
more transparency, so that everyone sees what we are doing and where
we're going.

We need to change the website to accommodate this change. If you see
any changes that need to occur on the website, please file them on
Google Code. The project is hosted here:

http://code.google.com/p/growl/

You'll also note that we are able to link all 5 google groups that we
have for the project on the index page alone, which is outstanding.
For those of you who are not familiar with it, we have 5 groups/
mailing lists total:

Discussions
Development
Announcements (beta and final)
Localizations
New Apps

I doubt that a lot of people knew about all five lists.

None of this changes who we host with. We're still using Network
Redux for website hosting, and for at least 1.1.6, we're using
Cachefly for downloads. This may change to having the downloads at
Google Code, we just need to look at the rules for that.

We have a lot of work to do, and only a few people to do it right
now. If anyone would like to contribute their time to help with this
effort of moving to google code hosting, please let us know. For
instance, we could use help recreating open tickets on launchpad over
on google code, so that we can move off that site completely.

Chris
