I called HP support one time, and they were pretty much ignorant of what Growl actually was. You can try it, but it'll likely be a dead end.
Growl really doesn't take up a whole lot of resources unless it's displaying a notification. If it comes down to it, reinstall Growl, and then go set it to not notify you. If it affects your printer drivers for Growl to not be installed (I doubt it btw, just saying you could do this to make things work properly). No worries, you weren't half as rude as most of the people we've dealt with on this sort of thing. At least you didn't threaten to kill myself and my family over it.
