I'm in exactly the same boat, I purchased 1.3 as I felt like supporting the developers, but what they failed to mention in the app store that their re-write for 1.3 has broken EVERY SINGLE APP that uses growl. I have about 6 popular apps and now none of them work (Spotify, Coda etc)
Growl 1.3 should have been backwards compatible, it's absurd and bordering a scam that you start charging for software you've essentially broken.
