I'm having a similar problem. I upgraded to Lion, purchased Growl 1.3.3, and installed it. As you can see, I have nothing in my menu bar or in my system preferences: http://screencast.com/t/CyTRNzrGUHPR
I'm hoping someone from Growl will help me get this working. Otherwise I'm going to aggressively pursue a refund.
