Contact apple if you want a refund. Saying something like that up front doesn't bode very well for the conversation here, it just makes people not like you from the start. Which you saw from the other thread. I would suggest that when you contact others in the future, that you keep that in mind and perhaps start off on a more positive note. Just a suggestion. :)
Anyhow, you provided us just a few details really. Growl 1.3+ is not in system preferences, so that's out. Can you open Activity Monitor and see if Growl is running?
