The error logs are actually erroneous, and should not have been left
in the final build (I have never experienced an issue with the method
we use, and still those errors everytime). Not everything that uses
launchd winds up generating a plist in those locations. The
SMSetLoginItemEnabled function we do does add to launchd, and the best
way to check that is to use launchctl from the command line:
launchctl list | grep growl
and it should list com.growl.GrowlLauncher if the switch is set to On
when everything is working properly, and no listing when it is off.
I have no real clue why it would work sometimes, and not others,
although you might try the usual troubleshooting, repair permissions,
reset the launchd database (There are a couple of utilities out there
that can do this without figuring out the command line way, such as
Cocktail) and the like.
