Well the easiest way to see that any app is running, in general, is to
launch Activity Monitor and then simply search for it.

So make sure that you have Growl set to run in the menubar. However,
apparently we have hit upon some sort of issue causing Growl to not start
with the recommended (and really only) way to start something up at login
under sandboxing. So you're hitting that issue.
