Getting the same thing with the growl preferences window opening every time 
I log in. I'm on growl 1.4 and osx 10.8.1. Check my user login items and 
Growl was not listed there. No other settings seem to control this 
behavior, unless I don't have growl run at startup at all. But that's no 
good.
