Due to the change from being a single .app rather than a preference pane, the App Store can get overzealous and actually install 1.4 inside of the prefpane over the old GrowlHelperApp (not sure if its still doing this on Mountain Lion, but I doubt its changed). You can use our uninstaller from here: http://growl.googlecode.com/files/Uninstall%20Growl.zip, or just delete the preference pane, and then reinstall 1.4 from the app store.
