Hi, so the appstore is kind of overszealous in its detection of Growl. Please try Growl Version Detective, available here http://growl.cachefly.net/Growl%20Version%20Detective1.2.2.app.zip and see on the first tab whether it thinks you have any extra copies of Growl you missed. You might also try ejecting your TimeMachine backup drive if you have one, as sometimes the app store gets confused about it as well.
