The utility did indeed find the problem. Some time ago I had grabbed a copy 
of the HWGrowl source to play with. Apparently MAS was finding the copy of 
the binary in the build directory and deciding that it was already 
installed. Cleaning the source tree fixed the problem. Thanks for the help.
