I highly doubt you'll ever see Apple support anything but NC. GrowlMail is
available for Mail, I don't know of a solution for Reminders, there's a
script floating around for Messages, and scripts floating around for ical.

Twitter already supports Growl. I don't know that Steam does, but it may.
However, yes, contact Steam and Facebook if their apps do not support
Growl. Alfred, Transmit, Hazel and Transmission should indeed work all the
time, so if you are having issues with those let's start a new thread on
that.

If you're really looking to learn to code, I don't think it'd be a horribly
awful thing to start with. There would be different kinds of challenges,
and you would learn how the system works in general I would think.
