Contact Apple about what you want with the pay model, we don't control that if we want to use the app store, and we want to use the app store.
I misread your initial post, so obviously i thought you said nothing showed up in Console, so that left me with nothing. Console is an application, click on spotlight and type Console. Then in the search at the top right type Growl. The only problem you have is 2 dock icons as far as i can tell. That doesn't seem like a big deal to me, maybe something else is going on? Why else would you say "I won't be advising people to use it the way it is"?
