1) menu.lst config is still supported
2) insmod's are optional except for partmap
3) you don't have to use grub-mkconfig. In fact I use manual grub.cfg on my
machine. Then your grub.cfg could look like
root=hd0,1
linux /boot/vmlinuz root=sda1
initrd /boot/initrd
boot
